- One letter of reference from someone with whom you have had contact within the past two years, either personally or via phone or email;
- If applicable, proof of medical insurance, motor vehicle registration and driving licence (if any).
You may also need to pay a fee equivalent to US$100.
Once you have your IDL, which takes approximately four weeks to arrive in your home country, you may drive anywhere throughout our territories, including Dubai and Sharjah, without restriction. In addition, we strongly encourage you to buy travel insurance from your insurer or us so that you do not face any difficulties travelling abroad.
Conclusion: Why an International Driving licence?
You must obtain an international driving licence to drive an international vehicle across borders. This is for everyone driving abroad. Not just those who travel internationally. Everyone should have an International Driver’s licence (IDL).
The reason is that you’re crossing national boundaries when you cross state lines. So you need to obey the rules and regulations of each country you visit. For example, there may be toll roads, and some countries have speed limits while others do not. Some countries require drivers to carry proof of insurance, while others require them to wear seat belts. All these factors combined make it hard for visitors to determine which laws apply to them and how they can navigate safely throughout the world.
At the same time, tourists often become lost in foreign cities due to language barriers. This means they may be unable to tell where to go or what road signs mean. You cannot even ask for directions if you don’t speak the local language. This is particularly dangerous if you’re driving.
So, if you’re planning to venture overseas, please ensure that you have a valid IDL because you’ll need it to avoid any legal issues whilst driving abroad.
You might also consider obtaining a visitor visa and visiting the local embassy or consulate to obtain your IDL. This way, you can easily stay safe and sound in your travels.
