Quick Look
General Motors is a US-based automotive conglomerate which manufactures automobiles and related components. Its core business is in automobile manufacturing. At present, GM also owns Saab Automobile Company, Holden Limited (Australia), Vauxhall Motors (UK) and subsidiary Opel AG (Germany). In addition, the company sells commercial vehicles, parts, and financial services under the Chevrolet Motor Division; utilities for the North American operations under the Buick/Cadillac division; recreational vehicles under the Hummer division; and commercial trucks, buses and speciality vehicles under the International Truck & Coach Corporation. In addition, it operates Pontiac Motor Division, an electric car manufacturer based in Canada. Currently, it holds a 12% share of world auto markets, compared to 10% ten years ago. As of 2007, it had annual revenues of $112 billion.
GM originated in 1908 when William C Durant formed Durant Motors Company which became General Motors Corporation in 1911. In 1914, Henry Ford and Alfred P Sloan founded Ford Motor Company, and in 1918 Flint & Walling Manufacturing Company merged with Durant Motors Company to form General Motors Corporation. In 1929, GM acquired Nash Motors, Oldsmobile, and Oakland Motors. During World War II, the U.S. government nationalised GM as the United States owned 80% of the stock. General Motors returned to private ownership in 1956.
Growth in the global auto industry, the introduction of newer technologies, and the growth in demand for fuel-efficient cars have driven the company’s success. However, competition from Asian automakers like Toyota, Honda, BMW, and Volkswagen has been aggressive. Several mergers and acquisitions have occurred, including those between Chrysler Corporation and Daimler-Benz, Ford Motor Company and Volvo Group, and Renault–Nissan alliance. Other notable companies include Fisker Automotive, Saturn, and Saab Automobile AB.
The company’s headquarters are located in Detroit, Michigan, United States. The corporation maintains production facilities in 22 countries, most notably China, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Sweden, Spain, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Austria, France, Italy, India, Russia, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Turkey, Thailand, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Argentina, Uruguay, Indonesia, Colombia, Costa Rica and the Philippines. It is currently the largest automaker in revenue and the second-largest worldwide vehicle production.
Types of General Motor Vehicles
There are four types of general motors, namely; (1) Automobiles, (2) Motorcycles, (3) Commercial Vehicles and (4) Farm vehicles.
A car is an automobile or any vehicle for transporting passengers. There are more than 6 million registered drivers in Australia alone, which is why we have a national road code. But there are also 2.5 million unregistered drivers that drive unsafely and recklessly without a licence. This makes them illegal drivers or traffic offenders. Unlicensed drivers are often involved in fatal accidents because they do not obey traffic rules and regulations. So, it pays to check whether a driver has a valid license before letting them behind the wheel.
Motorcycles are two-wheeled motorcycles, bicycles that have been modified to travel faster and further, usually through the use of larger or better-performing engines.
Commercial vehicles are big trucks used for carrying goods and materials across long distances, such as heavy machinery, containers, freight trains, construction equipment, and large cargo ships.
A farm vehicle is designed to assist farmers in the agricultural industry. Their primary purpose is to make farming more accessible and cheaper. Many small tractors are now equipped with GPS systems to help farmers manage their crops remotely.
There are four main categories for most automobiles. These are coupe, convertible, coupe-convertible, and sedan. These are also known as saloons, convertibles, coupes and sedans. Coupe models are created to show off the car’s features and attract consumers to purchase such vehicles. Converts feature more practicality in design and therefore are preferred by many buyers. Sedan models are considered the safest option because they usually come equipped with safety measures such as airbags. Most cars in the world are of the coupe style. However, the convertible model is gaining popularity fast.
