What is General Motors doing for Sustainability, Goals and Report?

posted on January 25, 2023

General Motors is committed to developing sustainable solutions and reducing their impact on the planet.

They have established a sustainability strategy based on four main pillars:

  • (1) promoting the use of renewable energy;
  • (2) optimizing efficiency in manufacturing processes and vehicles;
  • (3) investing in green technologies; and
  • (4) engaging with local communities.

To promote the use of renewable energy, General Motors has set an aspirational goal to run all of its operations using 100% renewable electricity by 2050.

The company has implemented solar panels in several of their factories with plans to expand these initiatives further. GM is also aiming to reduce their global carbon footprint by transitioning to more efficient power sources for their vehicles.

The company is taking steps towards greater efficiency within its production processes, such as investing in automated processes that can reduce waste and reduce the amount of resources used during production.

Additionally, GM is focusing on creating cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles that meet government standards for fuel economy and emissions. The company currently produces several electric vehicle models which are powered by a combination of battery packs and fuel cells, as well as offering hybrid versions of other popular models.

General Motors is investing heavily into green technologies such as electric batteries, hydrogen fuel cell development, and connected car systems that could increase efficiency while reducing emissions within the transportation industry.

In particular, GM has announced plans to invest $27 billion in electric vehicle research & development over the next 5 years in order to move towards fully electric cars by 2035.

Additionally, GM hopes to replace range anxiety with long lasting batteries capable of powering cars up to 1000KM/charge with fast charging capabilities.

Lastly, GM believes that it’s important for them to actively engage with local communities around them and be a positive force for change when it comes to sustainability practices or social issues.

The company frequently works alongside local partners like charities, environmental groups or community organizations on projects related to improving environmental quality or providing educational opportunities around STEM topics for students from underserved populations.

In addition, last year General Motors pledged $2 million towards racial justice initiatives across multiple states aimed at creating more equitable outcomes for communities of color affected by systemic racism in America.
