Getting an International Driving Licence in the UAE is more accessible than most would imagine. There are also options for those who prefer more traditional methods.
When it comes time to obtain a licence, you can go two ways. Either opt for the online method, where you can apply online with any mobile device connected to the internet, or pay a visit to your local DMV office.
The best place to begin is the DMV, conveniently located next to Dubai Police Headquarters and offers services in several languages, including English, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Russian.
For non-residents of the UAE, the application process is slightly longer. It requires submission of an original passport along with copies of birth certificates, proof of residency (if applicable) and medical records.
It may seem daunting to apply for a driver’s licence, but plenty of resources are available to help you. For example, you’ll find detailed information on obtaining a visa extension once in the country.
Once complete, you must undergo eye tests and pass an oral test. If you do not already have a valid UAE driver’s licence, you will receive temporary licences upon completing these steps.
You can then drive legally within the confines of the United Arab Emirates for three months, after which you will need to renew.
A licence is issued for five years. Renewal costs approximately $35 and is done in person at an authorised DMV location.
International Driving Licence
A driver’s licence is the document issued by authorities which allows them to drive legally. This paper details how to obtain a driver’s licence for someone who doesn’t hold any valid national permits.
Driving licences come in two forms:
• Non-resident permit – Usually used for foreign visitors/tourists.
• International Driving Permit (IDP) – Can be obtained after ten days’ training.
The IDP is also known as International Licence, Intercountry Driving Licence or World Driving licence.
A non-resident permit is required if the applicant hasn’t held a driving licence anywhere else. However, it may not be necessary if the visitor holds a valid vehicle registration certificate.
The following documents are needed to apply for an IDP:
• National ID card
• Passport (or travel visa)
• Valid driving licence (if applicable)
Why an International Driving licence?
An International Driving licence is an essential document for anyone planning to drive abroad. This licence permits them to operate vehicles in various countries across the globe. This permit allows individuals to carry out activities such as driving, ferrying passengers, operating equipment etc. Individuals with valid permits can operate vehicles within the country where they hold their licences. Therefore, it is essential to be well aware of the rules and regulations concerning the issuance and validity of these documents.
National authorities and organisations, such as local motoring associations, issued international driving licences. These bodies also monitor the number of drivers who do not possess licences. As a result, the licensing authorities may revoke the licence of non-licenced motorists or issue fines to them. In addition, they may also ban drivers from entering the country for which the permit had been granted.
The most common reason international driving permits are not obtained is due to a lack of awareness among individuals. Although some people realise the benefits of acquiring such a document, they fail to avail themselves of the services their respective governments offer. However, obtaining an international driving permit is not difficult. All that individuals require is to complete a few simple forms and pay a small fee. The entire procedure takes only minutes to complete. Furthermore, obtaining an international driving licence is cheaper than purchasing vehicle insurance.
